NEBOSH Certificate - Distance package

Introduction
The NEBOSH Certificate is recognised as the standard qualification in health and safety for the non-safety specialists.  It is designed to help those with health and safety responsibilities (e.g. managers, supervisors and representatives of health and safety) to carry out their duties and functions more effectively. This distance learning package, with tutor support will help students meet the requirements of the NEBOSH syllabus and prepare them for the examination.


AIMS
The aims of the NEBOSH Certificate are to:

  1. Provide students with an understanding of health and safety concepts
  2. Develop an appreciation of the need for health and safety and its control
  3. Enhance student's awareness and help make the workplace safer
  4. Improve productivity and reduce costs

LEARNING OUTCOMES
On successful completion of this course, delegates will be able to:

  • Identify common hazards and risks in the workplace and advise on suitable corrective actions
  • Identify sources of guidance and advice on health and safety
  • Assist in the preparation and regular review of an organisation's health and safety policy
  • Recommend suitable action to minimise risks
  • Investigate accidents, prepare reports, make cost effective proposals to prevent recurrence
  • Identify the main requirements of legislation and codes of practice
  • Maintain records and information to advise management

Course CONTENTS


The course follows the new NEBOSH Certificate syllabus for National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health (NEBOSH) certificate.  The syllabus is divided into 3 units (NGC1, NGC2, NGC3). Each of the first two units is further divided into a number of elements. 

Unit NGC1- Management of Health & Safety

  1. Health and safety foundations
  2. Policy
  3. Organising for health and safety
  4. Promoting a positive health and safety culture
  5. Risk assessment
  6. Principles of control
  7. Monitoring, review and audit
  8. Incident investigation, recording and reporting

Unit NGC2 - Controlling Workplace Hazards

  1. Movement of people and vehicles - hazards and control
  2. Manual and mechanical handling - hazards and control
  3. Work equipment hazards and control
  4. Electrical hazards and control
  5. Fire hazards and control
  6. Chemical and biological health hazards and control
  7. Physical and psychological health hazards and control
  8. Construction activities hazards and control

COURSE STRUCTURE
The course is delivered as a distance learning course.  It is split into three parts:

  1. Unit NGC1 - Management of Health & Safety is assessed with a written two hour examination
  2. Unit NGC2 - Controlling Workplace Hazards is also assessed with a written two hour examination
  3. Unit NGC3 - The Practical Assessment consists of carrying out a health & safety inspection of a workplace & preparing a management report
It is recommended that duration of study for the NEBOSH Certificate is approximately 80 hours plus private study and background reading.   Although student may be able to complete the course in a shorter duration.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
There are no academic prerequisites to joining this course.  Students would be required to write short reports and sit 2 written exams and one practical exam.


Examination details
The examination is held nationally four times a year (March, June, September and December) and comprises two 2-hour written papers (NGC1 & NGC2) and a practical assessment (NGC3). Each written paper consists of one ‘long-answer’ question and ten ‘short-answer’ questions. All questions are compulsory.
