Total Productive Maintenance ( TPM )Introduction to TPM and the Course
Total Productive
Maintenance is an approach to
addressing process and manufacturing equipment losses including;
breakdowns, accidents,
set-up time, process adjustments, defects,
etc. TPM
implementation can lead to major process and manufacturing cost reductions,
enabling organisations to be better placed to survive in the increasingly competitive
global markets. Maintenance can often be considered a non-value adding, non revenue earning activity but the lack of it will fairly soon affect income and the ability to satisfactorily complete tasks on time. It is perhaps because it is seen as non revenue earning that often there is a lack of attention to this area and the issues associated with breakdown and downtime. Traditionally, maintenance is the province of the maintenance department; operators have no role to play other than to report a problem or breakdown. TPM is about changing these attitudes. On a maintenance evolutionary scale; maintenance and the need for it has always been necessary. The next maintenance evolution step was planned preventive maintenance (ppm) which has been around for about 40 years. TPM is the next natural evolution and extension of ppm. Beyond TPM - possibly ‘Six Sigma’.
