NEBOSH National General Certificate - Distance/E-Learning package

Introduction

The NEBOSH National General Certificate is recognised as the standard qualification in health and safety for the non-safety specialists.  It is designed to help those with health and safety responsibilities (e.g. managers, supervisors and representatives of health and safety) to carry out their duties and functions more effectively. This integrated e-learning and distance learning package, with tutor support will help students meet the requirements of the NEBOSH syllabus and prepare them for the examination. This course is a collaborative effort between QM&T and ZBS.

Aims

The aims of the NEBOSH National General Certificate are to:

  • provide students with an understanding of health and safety concepts

  • develop an appreciation of the need for health and safety and its control

  • enhance students’ awareness and help make the workplace safer

  • improve productivity and reduce costs

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module delegates will be able to:

  • Identify common hazards and risks in the workplace and advise on suitable corrective actions

  • Identify sources of guidance and advice on health and safety

  • Assist in the preparation and regular review of an organisations health and safety policy

  • Recommend suitable action to minimise risks

  • Investigate accidents, prepare reports, make cost effective proposals to prevent recurrence

  • Identify the main requirements of legislation and codes of practice

  • Maintain records and information to advise management

 

The Package

The  packages are stand alone private tuition packages which allows the delegate to work at their own pace through the preset training material.  

The distance learning material is presented in several parts which will be sent to you upon course registration. The packages include:

  • A comprehensive set of tutor notes and support manual that include: 
    Revision sheet to monitor progress, Examples of examination papers A1, A2 and student submission for paper B, Practical assessment - management report (specimen), Paper B Mock practical, Observations Sheet (first part), Marking Guide for Paper B, Mock NEBOSH Examination, Mock NEBOSH Practical Paper B, Guidance on examination and special consideration procedure for students, Mock Examination Papers, Guidance on taking the examination.

  • CD  NEBOSH National General Certificate - The Computer Based Training (CBT) package consists of:
    • A computer disc (CD, which holds all the student training material, course notes and interactive exercises.
    • The CD contains the current NEBOSH General Certificate Syllabus. The training materials are arranged in units to mirror the syllabus. Each unit e.g. "Unit 12 - Chemical and biological health hazards and control" has its own index, which references the syllabus headings, i.e. "Forms of chemical agent: dusts, fumes, gases, mists, vapours and liquids".
    • Users are easily able to move between the different certificate units with the aid of scroll bars and next page buttons; they may also go back over the pages of information for further reference. Text is supported by diagrams, photographs and video clips, which may be accessed by clicking the window access button. A further aid comes in the form of the Student Notes button which is a notepad tool enabling the student to enter or paste any additional information to assist learning.
    • All relevant legislation for the NEBOSH syllabus is listed within unit 17. In addition, a view legislation button is available within units 1-16 whereby any relevant legislation can be accessed relating to the materials currently being reviewed.
  • One year's unlimited tutorial support is provided by telephone, fax, e-mail or written correspondence as required. See QM&T Team

Course Contents

The course follows the new syllabus for National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health (NEBOSH) certificate.  The syllabus is divided into sixteen units described below.

  12. Chemical and biological health hazards and control

  13. Physical and psychological health hazards and control

  14. Construction activities - hazards and control

  15. Incident investigation, recording and reporting

  16. Monitoring, review and audit

The course is delivered as a distance learning course.  It is split into three parts:

  • Part A1 - Management of Health & Safety (addresses Units 1-6 and 15-16) which is assessed with a written two hour examination

  • Part A2 - Controlling Workplace Hazards (addresses primarily Units 7-14, with reference to Unit 6) which is assessed with a written two hour examination

  • Part B - The Practical Assessment which consists of carrying out a health and safety inspection of a workplace and preparing a management report

It is recommended that duration of study for the National General Certificate is approximately 90 hours plus private study and background reading.   Although student may be able to complete the course in a shorter duration.

There are no academic prerequisites to joining this course.  Students would be required to write short reports and sit 2 written exams and one practical exam.

The examination is held nationally four times a year (March, June, September and December) and comprises two 2-hour written papers (Papers A1 and A2) and a practical assessment (Part B).  Each written paper consists of one ‘long-answer’ question and ten ‘short-answer’ questions.  All questions are compulsory.
